Colorado helps pay for your team's AI training
Two state programs can cover most of the cost of training your employees on AI and new technology: the Skill Advance Colorado job-training grants (a reimbursement to YOUR business, applied for through your local community college) and, if you sit in an Enterprise Zone like much of Adams County, a 12% state tax credit on training costs. Here is how they actually work — including the fine print most write-ups skip.
Skill Advance Colorado, in plain language
- What it is: state grants (Colorado First for new hires; Existing Industry for current staff) that reimburse employers for customized job training. "Adapting to new technology" is written into the Existing Industry program's purpose — AI upskilling fits squarely.
- The money (FY26 figures — confirm the current year with your college representative): up to $2,800 per new-hire learner or $2,500 per incumbent learner per year, and more for micro-businesses (up to $3,800/$3,500). Caps: $150,000 per application.
- A match is required: your business contributes a share of the cost in cash or in-kind — trainee wages during training count toward it.
- How it works: YOU apply through the Skill Advance representative at your local community college (Front Range Community College for Adams County), before any training starts. Approval takes roughly three weeks. You pick the training vendor and name them in the application.
- Eligibility gates that matter: Colorado for-profit businesses and non-governmental 501(c)(3)s; trainees must be full-time (32+ hrs/week), non-seasonal, non-retail employees; urban-county employers must pay an average wage at least $2.00/hr above Colorado minimum wage; Existing Industry grants are available every other year.
- What it will NOT fund: generic basics (intro computer skills, Microsoft Office/Google Workspace training), strategic planning, consulting services, or off-the-shelf courses — the training must be genuinely customized to your business.
The 12% Enterprise Zone stack
If your business address is inside a Colorado Enterprise Zone — much of Adams County, including Brighton and Commerce City, qualifies under the map effective January 1, 2026 — the Enterprise Zone Job Training Tax Credit gives you a 12% state income-tax credit on qualified training costs, including invoices from an outside training vendor. The two catches: you must pre-certify with your local zone administrator BEFORE the training starts (for Adams County: enterprisezone@adcogov.org), and the credit applies to what you actually paid — which means it stacks on top of Skill Advance, applying to your unreimbursed match. Check your address on the state's Enterprise Zone map, then have your CPA claim it on form DR 1366.
The honest part
Three things to know before you get excited. First, these are reimbursements — you pay the training invoice, then the grant pays you back after training completes, so you front the cash. Second, nobody can promise you a grant: awards are decided by the state's review committee, funds are first-come-first-served each fiscal year (July through spring), and we are required to say exactly that. Third, we are an independent training vendor — not affiliated with or endorsed by the Skill Advance Colorado program. What we can do: give you a grant-ready quote and a customized bilingual training program, and point you to your college representative who runs the application.
Where ClunasCo fits
We design and deliver customized, bilingual (English/Spanish) AI-adoption training programs — built around your actual workflows, which is exactly what the program requires. You apply through your community college and can name ClunasCo as your third-party training vendor; we provide the formal quote the application needs, deliver the training, and hand you the documentation the program requires. Typical programs run $3,500–8,000 depending on sessions and team size, priced from our standard rate card.
Program figures are FY26 and change by fiscal year — confirm current caps, match rates, and window dates with your community college's Skill Advance representative before budgeting. Tax-credit questions belong with your CPA. This is general information, not legal, tax, or grant advice, and no grant award is ever guaranteed.
